![]() LiveJournal fandom was unimpressed by the company's desire to profit off of the popularity of fanfic, not to mention a sales pitch to get buy-in from copyright holders saying things like "All the FANLIB action takes place in a highly customized environment that YOU control" (see File:FanLib info.pdf). Her post, An Archive Of One's Own, was one of many in LiveJournal fandom reacting to the commercial startup FanLib, which had tried to recruit some fanfic writers for its new fic archive. It requires that DMCA takedown notices be signed in order to be acted upon and says that the OTW "will remove the content upon satisfactory review of the merits of the infringement claim."ĪO3 was first proposed in May 2007 by Astolat. The archive's interface is planned to be translated into languages other than English in order to make it more accessible to an international userbase. ![]() AO3 permits Underage sex, RPF, and other controversial content, as it is intended to be an archive for any and all types of fanworks. Astolat's post and subsequent discussions led to the conclusion that there needed to be a reliable non-profit fanwork-hosting site that was run by people who were themselves fans, and would therefore know what fans wanted and work in the interest of fandom.ĪO3 is currently designed to host text-based fanfiction as well as fandom nonfiction and allows embedding (but not yet hosting) for vids, fanart and podfic. On the internet, this has led to websites mass-deleting fan accounts, fanfiction, etc. This issue was especially important because transformative fandom has been repeatedly targeted due to the debated legality of fanworks, which involves issues of copyright, intellectual property, and fair use. The post discussed instances in the past when websites and corporations attempted to profit from fandom, fans, and fanworks on their online platforms, while not respecting or protecting fandom. According to the site's main page, it is "A fan-created, fan-run, nonprofit, noncommercial archive for transformative fanworks, like fanfiction, fanart, fan videos, and podfic."Īrchive of Our Own is a "fan-created, fan-run," site which was first proposed in the post An Archive Of One's Own by Astolat in 2007. AO3, is a multi-fandom archive website owned and operated by the Organization for Transformative Works, which largely hosts fanfiction. 9.3 History: Some 2007/2008 Fan CommentsĪrchive of Our Own, a.k.a.

![]() It’s just not (economical) to put solar on rooftops on campus. “They’ll probably build solar carports similar to what Michigan State has. “I definitely think (the solar project) is important because these 25 megawatts of solar will be visible,” Simon said. ![]() Simon told The Daily he thinks installing solar panels on building roofs is a solid step forward, but he is doubtful that the project will save the University money. “We wrote similar language in each of the requests saying it is our hope that bidders bid on both of these together so that we can be working collaboratively.”Īdam Simon, earth and environmental sciences professor, specializes in practical solutions to human-caused climate change. “(The proposals are) technically separate, but we timed them to go out at the same time,” Stults said. She clarified that the city’s proposal request is separate from the University’s new plans, but symbolizes their mutual commitment to clean energy. Missy Stults, Ann Arbor sustainability and innovations director, told The Daily the city submitted a similar Request for Proposal last month requesting solar installations which would provide one megawatt of energy for Ann Arbor. ![]() “The University and (Ann Arbor) are cross-promoting opportunities.” Some, such as the United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS), devote themselves to more left-wing causes, in this case holding to account multinational companies that exploit their workers in factories, but there are also conservative groups such as Young Americans for Freedom, as well as non-partisan groups.Ĭultural and ethnical student organizations help students forge smaller communities from the large university population, and publications such as the Michigan Daily, published five days a week during the Fall and Winter terms, allow students to keep abreast of the latest news on campus.“U-M will be prioritizing potential solar projects built on large rooftops and on elevated structures over parking decks and parking lots,” Broekhuizen wrote. Michigan has a history of student activism, and there are a number of groups dedicated to various worth causes. The Michigan Marching Band is over 100 years old and has 350 student members, and other noted musical ensembles include the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club, a men’s chorus with over 100 members. Michigan has more than 1,600 clubs and societies, including engineering project teams, community service organizations, and charitable projects. There are also off-campus apartments, houses, and co-operatives, which generally house upper division and graduate students, as well as ‘theme communities’ within residence halls, where students can immerse themselves among peers with similar interests. Michigan's body of living alumni comprises more than a half million people, which is one of the largest alumni bases of any university in the world and a valuable resource for current students when it comes to networking and building industry connections.Īround a quarter of all students are accommodated on campus, with many residence halls serving undergraduates, and family housing that is intended mainly for graduate students. Michigan has been lauded for having high standards of research, and the university’s comprehensive graduate program offers doctoral degrees in the humanities, social sciences, and STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) as well as professional degrees in architecture, business, medicine, law, pharmacy, nursing, social work, public health, and dentistry. It has a large student body of around 46,000, with undergraduates numbering two-thirds of that number. Michigan spans 780 acres, which is made up of its Central and North campuses, two regional campuses, and a center in Detroit. One of the foremost research universities in the United States, the University of Michigan was founded in 1817, before Michigan had even become a state, and moved from Detroit to what is now its Central campus in Ann Arbor in 1837. The description below is accurate, although some practices may have changed temporarily during the pandemic. See for the latest new about the undergraduate application process. ![]() ![]() Solid Domain (Thrust chamber wall) - Conduction heat transfer Liquid Domain (Coolant) - Convection heat transfer Gas Domain (Combusted Gases) - Convection and Radiation heat transfer Heat transfer and structural characteristics are excellent.īasically there are three domains in a regenerative cooled rocket engine. One solution has been " channel wall" thrust chambers, so named because the hot gas wall cooling is accomplished by flowing coolant through rectangular channels, which are machined or formed into a hot gas liner fabricated from a high-conductivity material, such as copper or a copper alloy. But as chamber pressures and hot gas wall heat fluxes have continued to increase (>100 atm), still more effective methods have been needed. The primary advantage of the design is its light weight and the large experience base that has accrued. These chamber designs have been successfully used and several other Air Force and NASA rocket engine applications. This led to the design of " tubular wall" thrust chambers, by far the most widely used design approach for the vast majority of large rocket engine applications. It became necessary to design new coolant configurations that were more efficient structurally and had improved heat transfer characteristics. The coolant with the heat input from cooling the liner is then discharged into the injector and utilized as a propellant.Įarlier thrust chamber designs, had low chamber pressure, low heat flux and low coolant pressure requirements, which could be satisfied by a simplified " double wall chamber" design with regenerative and film cooling.įor subsequent rocket engine applications, however, chamber pressures were increased and the cooling requirements became more difficult to satisfy. Regenerative cooling is the most widely used method of cooling a thrust chamber and is accomplished by flowing high-velocity coolant over the back side of the chamber hot gas wall to convectively cool the hot gas liner. Most of this heat is expelled along with the gas that contains it however, heat is transferred to the thrust chamber walls in quantities sufficient to require attention. The heat created during combustion in a rocket engine is contained within the exhaust gases. Has had been one of my long time peeves, sorry Gnus. Is sort of non-trivial (my case at least).
